Take a guess what this is?
Nope, its not black olives... though i wish i'm munching on some right now with a martini in hand while typing this hehe;p
Give up? Well its called a Kembayau (I think that's how you spell it - dun't really know the english name for it though-_-'') Its an olive like fruit which is kinda abundant in Brunei, Sarawak & Sabah, well maybe also in Indonesia - not quite sure on that... The interesting thing about this fruit is that in order to eat it, you have to soak it in hot water for a few minutes orelse you'll be biting into the smooth purplish skin into a thin layer (which would be the flesh of the fruit) and into something kinda hard inside which would be the seed hehe;p Funny but true, the seed actually takes up roughly 70% of the fruit!! And you just kinda eat it like a longan or lychee where you eat the flesh and spit out the seed... And it's soooo gooood to eat^^
Not only that, you can't boil them as they'll just go hard and in the end will be inedible for you. Double soaking them in boiling water will also do no good, so its only meant to be soaked once only, guess its good as you can make as much as you like to have in one go and not worry bout any wastage hehe^^ The skin is edible however i prefer having it without the skin as the skin makes my teeth purplish hehe;p
I've always liked eating this fruit since I was little and it was kinda nice when one of my roomates brought this back with him from his leave hehe;p thanks buddy... And to top it off you only need boiling hot water and salt or soy sauce or sugar and the list goes on hehe;p
Think I'm gonna go make some right now, before they go rotten^^ Laterz.........
